Thyroid Surgery
Thyroid surgery involves removal of part or all of the thyroid gland to treat nodules, goitre, hyperthyroidism, suspected or proven thyroid cancer, and obstructive symptoms. Modern thyroid surgery aims for safe removal while preserving voice, parathyroid function, and achieving the best oncologic and functional outcomes.
What is Thyroid Surgery?
Thyroid surgery (thyroidectomy) is an operation to remove abnormal thyroid tissue. Depending on the disease, surgery may remove a single lobe (lobectomy/hemithyroidectomy), most of the gland (subtotal), or the entire gland (total thyroidectomy). The procedure is performed by head & neck or endocrine surgeons with careful identification and preservation of important structures such as the recurrent laryngeal nerves and parathyroid glands.
When Is Thyroid Surgery Recommended?
Types of Thyroid Surgery
1. Hemithyroidectomy / Lobectomy
Removal of one thyroid lobe (± isthmus). Often sufficient for a single suspicious nodule or unilateral benign disease.
2. Total Thyroidectomy
Removal of the entire thyroid gland. Recommended for confirmed cancer, large bilateral disease, or some cases of hyperthyroidism.
3. Completion Thyroidectomy
Removal of remaining thyroid tissue after an earlier lobectomy when further treatment is required.
4. Subtotal Thyroidectomy
Partial removal leaving a small remnant; less commonly performed today due to recurrence risk.
5. Central / Lateral Neck Dissection
Removal of lymph nodes in the central or lateral neck compartments when cancer has spread to nodes.
